Eihei Dogen (1200-1253) was a teacher of meditation who focused on “just sitting” as the practice of meditation. Regarded as the founder of the Soto Zen school, he left us copious instructions for opening ourselves to the realm of practice by just sitting.

We come to practice with thoughts, concerns, plans and elaborations; if we’re lucky, we end practice having forgotten ourselves for a few minutes, perhaps experiencing glimpses of the simplicity of just sitting. While it may seem strange, even disturbing, forgetting ourselves is crucial.
